F1 double world champion and newly crowned Sports Personality of the Year Lewis Hamilton brought his dog Roscoe along as his red carpet date and the English Bulldog was one of the stars of Sunday night’s show.

The Formula One world champion often takes Roscoe track side so the good-natured dog’s impeccable behaviour – sitting quietly to one side as Hamilton posed with the coveted SPOTY trophy for photographers – was not a surprise. But the two year old dog won even more fans when his owner was giving press interviews giving each journalist a Bulldog stare.

Roscoe has been a regular companion to Hamilton over the past few years, and the star has revealed in the past how as a child he dreamt of owning an English bulldog. Now he owns not one but two – as well as Roscoe, Hamilton and girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger also share puppy Coco.

Hamilton has described Roscoe as his ‘best buddy’ explaining: “'He’s my new best buddy. I grew up with dogs around me. My mum has five dogs and my dad too.

Guide dog Hattie joins runner Libby Clegg

Roscoe wasn’t the only dog at the SPOTY show. Runner Libby Clegg brought along her guide dog Hattie. There was also an appearance from kids’ TV favourite dog, Hacker, who made an impromptu appearance.

Meanwhile, Nicola Adams and Ross Murdoch, who presented the Young Sports Personality Of The Year Award to gymnast Claudia Fragapane, appeared on stage with a pair of Scottish terriers, two of the mascots at this year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Aggy and Tilly. Interest in the breed sky-rocketed after their starring role in the opening ceremony of the Games according to the Kennel Club.
